THIS IS MADNESS AT ITS FINEST!

Yo!! JOJO! Who is cuter than you?

Meet Josette Rouas. She is an amazing chef, art consultant, server, model, surfer, snowboarder, the list goes on and on. Needless to say, with all of these different hats she wears, she needs a disguise every once in a while! Hence the Glass Moustache.

Jojo is pictured here at UC Berkeley where she is brushing up on academia during a summer trip to the West Coast. Here on Oahu, she and her husband Tom own a wonderful prepared foods company called Zarie's, which features Mediterranean cuisine. Oh!! And you might remember Tom from a blog post back in July, found here.

Here is the lovely couple as featured on the Give Into Nature website:

These two are definitely some of Oahu's finest!

Oh! and P.S.

a unicorn horn in your favorite colors will be coming your way at an upcoming Artfest!

Moustache March!!!

it's time to class this place up a bit, perhaps with some professional photos yes?

Shouts out to Tom Richards and to Palmer Photography for the images in this post! These Tahoe boys decided to see how much facial hair they could grow during the month of March. Let me rephrase...Tahoe MEN *fans self*

this guy's even got the flavor saver to harness the power of that bagel!

Tom the camera just loves you and your friends!

You're welcome ladies, you're welcome.
And I swear my next post will include staches of the glass variety!

nothin like the real thing...

so there i was, minding my own business while trying to sell glass mustaches at the Haleiwa Farmer's Market, when suddenly the best stache i've ever seen walked by! it all happened so fast i guess, that i didn't even catch this gentleman's name, but his moustache is of the most epic proportions.

must share ;)

glass moustache takes kailua by storm

because really, ladies night should always include a glass moustache!

hood up stache up

electrical storms are so rare out here in hawaii, but lately it's been all thunder and lightening, waterspouting and hailing, tornado watching and flash flood warning, but don't worry. we decided to brave the elements and ladies night actually left the building to check out the kailua nightlife.
it was good!
i might even say crazy storms = crazy fun! fun seems like the word i am using the most these days...no complaints :)

Extra thanks to this random gentleman, Denise Hevicon, Sharon Suzuki, and always to Mabby McDiarmid for sharing the stache love!

Because, really, who can resist the charms of Leo...

I don't want the other men in my life to get jealous or disappointed, but it may be time for me to come clean. I'm in love with Leo Decker!

Can you blame me? He's just so darn handsome, and good with kids, and loyal, and well what else could I ask for? I mean sure it would be nice if he could provide for me but let's get real. I live in Hawaii where most men are more into surf than work! Mom I swear I'm not settling, I swear!

The best part about Leo is that there's enough of him to go around. Plus I'm not the jealous type, I realize that such awesomeness must be shared! And now others are in love with him too, for example, the lovely Butler family from Michigan discovered him this past weekend at Artfest Waikiki.

Thankfully, Leo didn't completely steal the show. Phew! He left them alone for at least a short moment so that they could discover the glass artwork that I make. These kids are too cute for words! And they had a blast with the glass moustache!

Meet Olivia:

Lily:

and Joel:

Cutest kids in the world! An extra special thanks goes out to their mom, Stephanie Butler, for sending along these photos. Enjoy the rest of your vacation and we'll hope to see you back in Hawaii soon!

And any chance I get I give a shout out to the Deckers...Katie and Meghan thanks for bringing Leo out for a visit. Much love always!!

Deep thoughts with Sara E. Calhoun Perry

Sara Calhoun Perry you left me in stitches when you posted up these photos! How funny are you with your facial expressions :-{D

Inspector (-ess) Clue-so?

Sara is a very talented artist herself, who exhibits her handcrafted magical boxes at Artfest Waikiki one weekend per month. Our mutual love for the magical and whimsical is quite a strong bond, and I daresay she is quite a muse! I just got done working in my studio where I made my first ever UNICORN HORN! Sara offered me the great idea of a horn on a long chain that can be held up to the forehead, much like how the glass mustache is held up to that lovely space between the nose and the mouth. Spaces on the face that are just begging for embellishment. Sara, thank you for helping me fill that space. You rock!

Kailua's Next Top Model!!!

A special thank you to Marissa Mackay who lives in Kailua, originally from upstate New York! This girl has got it going on...

I am 100% in love with the straw fedora / glass moustache / haute look combination, so much in fact that the ball is now rolling for my first ever fashion photo shoot! Marissa mentioned that she modeled and might be interested in trading some shots for glass jewelry and suddenly the wheels start turning in my head...I sure do know some talented folks!
Thanks Marissa, for being such an inspiration. I will be in touch about this photo shoot soon.
And may I just say that the Lanikai Craft Faire was a wonderful success...and the cheeseburger from Kailua Pub afterwards was the best reward!

if you've ever lost faith in humanity, this blog post might restore it

every once in a while i come across a kind of magic with what i do, connecting with people about art, and witnessing as others connect too. it's the best!

Nora (pictured on the left) is such a sweet girl, who i met at the I Love Kailua Town Party where i was selling my artwork. it was a very busy day but i noticed her and her family because they seemed quite taken with my artwork. she absolutely adored the glass moustache!

Jan Drake (pictured on the right), a visitor from Seattle, was waiting patiently for my attention as i helped the adults who were with Nora to make their selections. can you believe that he bought her that moustache? and one for himself! what a generous and random act of kindness. her smile was from ear to ear and i felt so lucky to see two people grow from strangers into friends within a matter of minutes.

thank you Jan! your generous spirit just shines.

The Glass Stache Takes First Friday by Storm!

As is the nature of most blogs, here we go with the narcissism! My apologies in advance for posting up photos of myself, but this was the most fun night and I have to blame the photography skills of the amazing Lan Thai for making me look good...or maybe it's just the glass stache ;)

So I have this theory that it's all about the props! Sometimes I get shy and can't bust them out, but it was First Friday, when all of the galleries in the Arts District of Honolulu aka Chinatown stay open late and there's pretty much always an epic street party going on by the end of the night. Needless to say my Elmer Fudd hat and glass stache created a little bit of a stir. I'm telling you, PROPS ROCK!! The right people will talk to you. I swear. Example: After next week, you might even be able to find some of my artwork available at that hot new spot Bwareville on Smith Street! I'll keep you posted...

In the meantime you can see that lovely ladies ^^^
-AND-

distinguished gentlemen^^^
simply FLOCK to the glass moustache.

Have fun out there kids! As for me, I'm staying in this weekend. This vog (volcanic smog for those of you not in Hawaii) has really got me down. Plus I've already stirred up enough trouble this month!
Oh I almost forgot, I do have something on the schedule. Hope to see you at the I Love Kailua Town Party this Sunday, where the glass moustache pendant will be on display from 11 to 4, and rumor has it you might get to meet the artist if you stop by!

i call it BLUE STEEL

I'm thinking this is it, I made it...finally there is a local celebrity rockin the glass moustache!

Meet Steven Parker.

Not only is he doing a fabulous job as a male model as evidenced by the above photo, but he is in film too! You absolutely should not miss 'One Kine Day,' and if you don't believe me then check out the trailer here. Steven Parker that mustache you're sporting around 1:51 minutes in is to die for! I might have to hit pause and make a whole new design based on it.

In the meantime though Kailua people should get very excited starting now. The glass moustache is available right here in town! Steve's family owns an amazing shop right on Hamakua Drive, Lanikai Home + Style. They have a fabulous collection of everything I want so please keep this in mind if you want to buy me presents. Oh and probably you might like it too :)

FYI, just updated my website with two other new galleries...
Ann Arbor Art Center Gallery Shop in Michigan and Pele Signatures in Waikiki.
Look out, world!

moustache ride with me...on a celebrity cruise!

This is from a few years back at Indigo in Chinatown...what a fun event!
Celebrity Cruise had hired me to blow glass at a private party to promote their Blow Glass at Sea program. We had so much fun! Can you tell?

That handsome man in the center gave the glass moustache some major competition! Thanks to Mabby McDiarmid and Debi Fontes for being some serious arm candy.
It's a framer!

the fanny pack mafia

I got lucky enough to run into my baby girl Shelly OBrien the other night! And Talia! Wow, life is good. Anyways, Mardi Gras reminded me of another awesome street fair and I do believe this photo was from Halloween Chinatown Honolulu 2 years ago?

Doesn't Shelly make a fabulous artiste?
This was Shelly's second moustache, the first one met an untimely demise...I do recollect getting a new phone and receiving this the first text message from an unknown number that went a little something like this:
"Hola, mustache down! Something something about doing the worm at a party and a broken stache and new scars."
Needless to say I gave her a discount :)

And if you are just a random bystander and not Shelly, do know that the glass moustache is definitely made of glass and can break. I run all of the pieces I create through an annealing cycle in a kiln, which makes the pieces more durable, but accidents do happen. Not to worry! If you save the pieces, I can fix the stache for a minimal fee. And if you don't have the pieces, I will give you a discount on one that is brand spankin new.

hoping your magical morning starts with a sweet stache!

How adorable is Annie Suite! This fresh faced photo was actually taken earlier today...because of the unbelievable support of friends.

This morning, Nilma Hunter showed my work at the Hawaii Kai Farmers' Market and tomorrow she is showing a small selection at the Haleiwa Farmers' Market. Neither of these markets would even exist without the fine organization and expertise of Annie Suite and Pamela Boyar. These two ladies have single-handedly transformed the market scene here on Oahu, by jurying in the artisans and working with local farmers, bakers, and chefs to ensure a top quality experience.
Just saying, where else can you pick up a fresh coconut to drink, the best summer rolls EVER at Happy's Hawaii, fruits and veggies at reasonable prices, and fun indulgences, like the glass moustache!

Oh yes of course I intended for the glass moustache to be social commentary on the paradigm shift of gender roles. Of course.

I wish I could take credit for the above image. I have no idea who to give credit to! Funniest thing anyone's ever sent me. I'll just have to credit my little sis for passing it along to me. Thanks again to the amazing Rebecca Landau!

I don't know how to properly introduce you to this kitteh. First of all, I don't know which one it is. Funny story:
My sister and her roommate got two kittens this past fall and named them after Peter Pan characters, Peter and Wendy. Well I guess when the kittehs were little their junk was microscopic. Ends up the one they named Wendy was a boy and the one they named Peter was a girl. Oops!
And this concludes my extremely deep post about gender roles and confusion. Much luck and love to Generation XYZ!

The Origin of the Bustache

Jenny!!! Why is this picture so tiny? Meh!
Are you being shy?

I have no problem bragging for you, maybe that'll help you get over this shy little moment. So Jennifer Wilson is quite possibly one of the funniest people I know. The first time we met, she pounced on the glass moustache and wouldn't let go. Now that's flattering considering how many art shows Jenny goes to and organizes and how many amazing glass artists she knows. Yes folks, she is the one who originally coined the term "bustache," taking into account where the moustache settles in when it's not in use. As if her sisters need any embellishment!
So, to summarize, Jenny is well traveled, talented, successful, has an excellent sense of humor, great taste, and natural beauty.
Jenny will be visiting out here in Hawaii for the Soft Flex Glass Art & Bead Show that she organizes, which will take place upstairs at Ward Warehouse on March 4th, 5th, and 6th. I'm hoping to be well enough to do the show too, so stop by and see us if you're in Honolulu that weekend! You shouldn't miss Jenny's creative glass designs!!
