Moustache Monocle by Mame

I have to admit, the last few weeks, I've been having a slight existential crisis. I am back from the best vacation ever at Pilchuck and travels throughout the Pacific Northwest. I also finally finished watching 'Six Feet Under.' Spoiler alert: Saddest most real ending to a series ever. And I mean EVER. 90210 had nothing on this Jenny!

Jennifer Garner is the most creative person I know, hands down. I mean, all you have to do is check out this photo she sent me! Out of control. She is the first person who asked me about making a monocle to go along with her mustache. Check out more of her work here. She is currently living and working in Connecticut, but she and I have been friends since our freshman year of college in Philadelphia. Jen I wish you still lived in Hawaii! Not a day goes by that I don't miss you.

So my friend Jennifer Garner hates her name these days, as everywhere she goes, people make idiotic (I'm assuming) comments about how there is an actress with the same name.
I wonder what name she will pick! I have to say I'm partial to Mimi only because that's what I used to call my Grandma when I couldn't say Leona.

Anyways, Jen, I hope the mustache and the monocle are helping you with your identity crisis, and that we get to talk soon to compare crises.

look ma no hands on this here handlebar!

how come some people can hold the mustache up with no hands while others get awkward and hold it upside down, etc. could this be called "moustache dexterity?" i would like to award Sean Farnum for the most skills so far in this category. what a cutie!

Thanks Sean for showing off your skillset, and to the amazing Amy Farnum for sharing this image with me!

from the great lakes over that big lake

is it possible that a little boy in Ann Arbor, Michigan, could make my day when i'm all the way across a giant ocean? awesome.

this photo was sent my way by my dear friend, Carrie Mood, who currently works at the Ann Arbor Art Center Gallery Shop. she told me that this little boy was so in love with the moustache pendants i make that he had to make his own out of paper! how exciting to feel like an inspiration to future artists! thank you Carrie, you have no idea how good this made me feel!!!

a total gem

Jessie Bean Goodman, even your name is priceless!
I was just rummaging through my computer and came up with this beauty, that you sent me so many moons ago.

The purse strap, the finger tattoo, the amazing glass moustache monocle; there's a million ways to conjure up a stache. But this photo, while reminiscent of dreams of being incognito at family gatherings, reminds me of my very first moustache, discovered in a bout of silliness with my brother around the time that we would have been starting grade school.

The simple beauty of long hair and its possibilities are endless. One can even section off two chunks at the front of one's head, wrap them symmetrically along the edge of the face for a criss cross effect under the nose, secured in place by an extremely kissable pouted set of lips.
Because who wouldn't want to kiss someone with a moustache!

Oh yes of course I intended for the glass moustache to be social commentary on the paradigm shift of gender roles. Of course.

I wish I could take credit for the above image. I have no idea who to give credit to! Funniest thing anyone's ever sent me. I'll just have to credit my little sis for passing it along to me. Thanks again to the amazing Rebecca Landau!

I don't know how to properly introduce you to this kitteh. First of all, I don't know which one it is. Funny story:
My sister and her roommate got two kittens this past fall and named them after Peter Pan characters, Peter and Wendy. Well I guess when the kittehs were little their junk was microscopic. Ends up the one they named Wendy was a boy and the one they named Peter was a girl. Oops!
And this concludes my extremely deep post about gender roles and confusion. Much luck and love to Generation XYZ!

The Origin of the Bustache

Jenny!!! Why is this picture so tiny? Meh!
Are you being shy?

I have no problem bragging for you, maybe that'll help you get over this shy little moment. So Jennifer Wilson is quite possibly one of the funniest people I know. The first time we met, she pounced on the glass moustache and wouldn't let go. Now that's flattering considering how many art shows Jenny goes to and organizes and how many amazing glass artists she knows. Yes folks, she is the one who originally coined the term "bustache," taking into account where the moustache settles in when it's not in use. As if her sisters need any embellishment!
So, to summarize, Jenny is well traveled, talented, successful, has an excellent sense of humor, great taste, and natural beauty.
Jenny will be visiting out here in Hawaii for the Soft Flex Glass Art & Bead Show that she organizes, which will take place upstairs at Ward Warehouse on March 4th, 5th, and 6th. I'm hoping to be well enough to do the show too, so stop by and see us if you're in Honolulu that weekend! You shouldn't miss Jenny's creative glass designs!!

Although I might break a tooth, next time can we trade? I'm dying for a candy necklace!

I had the pleasure of meeting the lovely Emma Gerard at Pilchuck a few years back. She is a wonderful artist herself, who recently developed a yummy looking glass candy jewelry line. She stays busy doing a lot of the bigger art shows in Canada and the US. That's right people she's from Canada! The glass moustache is international baby!

Doesn't she look like a hipster woodland sprite? Isn't she gorgeous? Does anyone else find it confusing that the ladies all look extra fine with a glass moustache?

party over here party over there

Tim Ayers, if I had the power I would crown you Party King. This guy's iPod has almost every song I want to dance to, he introduced me to Four Loko, and come onnnn look at how he color coordinated his shirt and drink. Color me impressed!

I was a Teachers Assistant for a glassblowing class this past summer at Penland and Tim was a student in the class. Thanks for making it so fun Tim! And thanks for the photo cause now party people everywhere will feel so boring now that you raised the bar. I have been told that the glass moustache is one of those accessories that really does bring the party!

Girls Weekend!!!

So I was thinking for a long time about starting a Facebook group or a blog to share this moustache fun, but I must admit, it was the generous Laura Fixler of Seattle and her customer appreciation pic that really got the ball rolling for me. She sent me this pic last week, and I must admit, I have been down for the count in 2011 with some pretty heavy health stuff. Can't work at Punahou or do art shows for a little while longer. Anyone that knows me knows I can't sit still for long, so her picture showed up at the perfect time. Thank you Laura!!
You and your friends are HOT and this photo is so festive and fun. Laura bought moustaches for everyone!

Oh and this is the perfect time for me to give shouts out to Kari Goldstein for giving Laura my contact information! Kari, all year people have been contacting me about moustaches and it is so often thanks to you!

In honor of the superbowl, bring out your game face!

Beccy Feather: Who is cooler than you? No one!!!
Thank you so much for sending along these fabulous photos from Pilchuck Glass School, Summer 2009

I do believe the fake serious faces work best with the moustache monocle...and these photos are my best evidence so far.

Southeast Moustache Phenomenon

Welcome to the fun!

Hi I'm Jessica Landau and I think it's way overdue that I thank the many folks who have helped to make my glass artwork such a success.

This will be a space for me to express my appreciation to the many customers who have supported my artwork, especially since my invention of the glass moustache at Penland School of Crafts way back in 2007.

And yes that ^^^ is me with Paul Stankard, glass artist extraordinaire, rocking his glass stache at Penland. That was the first batch, and ever since then I've been outfitting moustache parties here, there, and everywhere!

....

Because nothing screams Dirty Thirty like a moustache party...

...and art is that much more interesting when you can interact with it.

If you are a proud owner of the glass moustache, please send your photos to me at jesslandau@gmail.com and if you would like to become a proud owner of said moustache, check out my etsy site here. Please enjoy!
